My Dog Bartholomew (Bart)
![]()
My last Rottweiler was a great dog that I purchased from a breeder in Pennsylvania. Purchasing through a breeder cost me around $1000.00 on my first day. That included the dog and accessories. I received extensive paperwork on genetic lines. I had spent almost a year researching dogs before this purchase.
My first dog (Wolffegang) passed away recently from cancer. It was a brutal time for both of us. After he died I spent almost 6 months contemplating whether I should get another dog. Finally I started calling breeders.
Through someone I found out about a lady named Lynn, who does rescue work in Long Island. In other words, she finds homes for Rottweilers who don't have them.
It is now my opinion that they are NOT reject dogs. I think they're in the rescue program because for some reason or another these dogs have lost their homes.
In the case of Bart the guardian (not owner) was just too old to handle such a large dog. Bart is 130 Lbs, and the man was 70 something.
I was a little afraid that maybe I would get some crazy animal who has all kinds of quirks and problems.
Just the opposite!
In my experience, Bart is one extremely well mannered, well tempered, good looking dog. I see him learning at quantum speed and learning how to adjust in his new home.

Anyway, I have written this page to express to others that there are more dogs like Bart available out there. I believe that an adopted dog can make as good a pet as one from a puppy.
Another reason I like to adopt is that it is not as costly. Usually a small donation to help place other dogs in homes is all that is required. So take that $1000.00 and stick it in your favorite mutual fund for your dogs future! or yours.
At this point I would like to say to people who have children and/or cats, or are thinking of adopting:
Become Very experienced with handling large dogs prior to bringing one of these large animals to live in your home. Consult a certified trainer or certified expert before you adopt. Make sure that the dog you adopt has had a temperament test, and has been evaluated by certified experts knowledgeable with the Rottweiler. Consult the AKC with all your questions before adopting. Read many books about dogs before adopting. There is a link below that has several books listed which have been recommended by experienced dog professionals. These will be a helpful start. The Rottweiler is not for everyone, so do your homework. There are breeds suited for different kinds of people.
My 16 years with Rottweilers has been positive and I am happy that I found Bart .
